Careers in Transport

Join Portsmouth City Council to stand up for Portsmouth, take action to improve the city and the lives of our residents, and tackle the climate crisis. You can help us achieve our overarching purpose in Transport – to create a greener, healthier and better-connected city for everyone. Together we can change lives in Portsmouth for the better.

We must always look to the future by finding new ways and ideas to advance whilst building on our successes, well-established partnerships and expertise.

Transport is an important part of the Economy, Planning and Transport Directorate at Portsmouth City Council, along with Planning and Economic Growth, Highways and Infrastructure, and Property and Investment, which collectively have the responsibility for transforming Portsmouth.

We do this by creating thousands of new jobs and homes, boosting the local economy, making our air cleaner so people can live healthier lives, generating millions of pounds for local services, creating a strong sense of place, maintaining highways, and improving transport for a more sustainable future.

Putting our people front and centre is key to how we enable you to achieve your best in an inclusive environment where everyone can make a difference. You can embrace the opportunity that working at the council brings, providing a platform for you to have a varied and fulfilling career that is yours for the taking.

Why come and work in Portsmouth?

Portsmouth is a great waterfront city and a vibrant place to live and work. It is an island city with an “inner city” feel, a seaside location packed with attractions and events, and the advantage of fantastic countryside on its doorstep.

With a fast-growing university, high-tech industries and a vibrant cultural scene, Portsmouth is a modern city that looks to the future, but which is proud of its unique heritage as the home of the Royal Navy and historic dockyard. With fast road and rail links to London, Brighton and major airports, and ferry links to Europe, it is the perfect place to live and work.
