The service

The Election Services team has responsibility for administering parliamentary and local elections and referendums.

The service is also responsible for compiling the electoral register by means of an annual canvass exercise and maintaining the register on a daily basis throughout the year.

There are approximately 145,000 registered voters in Portsmouth divided between two parliamentary constituencies and 14 electoral wards.

Your New Role

You will provide administrative support across elements of both election and electoral registration processes.

You will assist in maintaining the electoral register and will be responsible for processing voter registration applications and undertaking routine tasks to ensure that the register is up-to-date and accurate.

You will use specialist electoral management software on a daily basis to administer these processes. This will include scanning application forms, data entry, generating letters, running routine reports and ensuring that data is accurately recorded at all times.

What you’ll need to succeed

You will  be an enthusiastic team player able to adapt to the changing needs of the service and be able to work under pressure and prioritise workloads in order to achieve statutory deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

You will have a clear understanding of the sensitivities of handling confidential information including data protection requirements and be able to work within a fixed procedural framework.

You will have the ability to communicate confidently and effectively both verbally and in writing as well as have a good understanding of customer care with the ability to engage with customers to provide appropriate advice and assistance.

You will be be computer literate with the ability to maintain accurate records using specialist electoral management software and have a flexible approach and a willingness to work additional hours at peak times including occasional evening and weekend work.
