Your new role

The D-Day Story is seeking an experienced General Manager to join and lead one of Portsmouth’s most unique attractions. This will include the day to day operation of the site, commercial activities and customer care to plan and deliver an exciting and complex public engagement programme in a distinctive heritage environment. 

This wide-ranging role will be pivotal in supporting the D-Day Story’s vision in reflecting the diversity of the city’s culture and communities, whilst also providing inspirational opportunities for people to enjoy and learn from the collections; and to showcase the national and international heritage of the city.

The General Manager will lead and develop the museum’s operational team including the Public Participation and Marketing Officers; boosting the moral of staff and volunteers into a unified and efficient team. This also include enhancing visitors experience, working with a variety of audiences, ensuring every visitor has an extraordinary and enriching experience, every time they visit. 
They will also be involved in the preparation of realistic budgets, managing them to ensuring that income targets are met and cost budgets not exceeded, taking counteractive action swiftly when needed.

You will also maintain museum security and health & safety procedures to ensure safety at all times for staff, volunteers and visitors. In additional you will also be responsible for the café on site, ensuring tasks are delegated and customer service standards are met. 

You will also need to have key relationship building and management skills, working with a variety of key relationships, including the Public Participation Officer, Services Manager and also key stakeholders in the city, including other attractions such as the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience. 
 Strong leadership and team-building skills 
 Extensive commercial and operational management experience, ideally in visitor attractions
 Innovation and creative flair
 Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
 Drive and determination
 Ability to multi task and work effectively under pressure
 Broad experience of budget setting, budget management and yield management
 Management of staff and volunteers
 Health and Safety experience 
 Experience of building partnerships that drive business

This role is a 16 month fixed term contract with potential to be extended / made permanent.
