Higher level teaching assistant (Visual Impairment) (HLTA VI)

Salary: 6 £21,841 – £25,481 p.a.(£17,007 – £19,842 pa, pro rata for 32.50 hours per week, TTO 40 weeks)

32.50 hours per week, Term time only (40 weeks).

Your New Role

As a HLTA you would be part of the Vision and Hearing Team, which is based in the Civic Offices in the city centre and is a successful team within the Inclusion Service. We are a supportive, enthusiastic, and experienced team who are looking forward to welcoming a new member of staff to our team. The team comprises of Specialist Teacher Advisers (Hearing and Visual Impairment), Communicators, and a Qualified Habilitation Specialist for VI pupils.

Portsmouth Vision and Hearing Team provides support to children and young people, at home, in pre-schools, schools and colleges whose sensory impairment has an effect on education, mobility and the ability to live independently.

The post holder under the supervision of the Specialist Teacher Advisers for Visual Impairment will undertake a variety of duties including supporting them to undertake the assessment of  children’s vision using a range of specialist testing materials.  You will check any equipment used by a VI CYP is functioning properly and keep an up to date log of equipment inventory and equipment issue/agreement forms. Collect and distributed equipment as necessary.  In addition you will prepare and build up  and maintain resources for children and young people with a visual impairment and differentiate materials for use in learning.

What you’ll need to succeed

As well as a knowledge of supporting VI children within a school setting, you will have excellent Literacy and numeracy skills, or Gcse English and maths or equivalent a Braille qualification at Level 2 or willing to learn.  In addition you will have experience of working with children with VI; proficiency in touch typing skills and shortcut keys; IT skills; knowledge of specialist solutions for people with a visual impairment or willingness to learn.
