Your New Role

As the Parks Cemetery Grave Digger you will be part of the Grounds Maintenance Operations Team. You will be responsible for excavating graves and general maintenance for the daily up keep of three cemeteries which will be based in Portsmouth. You will be working part of the team and will undertake a range of other grounds maintenance duties within Portsmouth parks and other open spaces, this may include grass cutting, hedge trimming, flowers and shrub planting, pruning of hedges and tree based epicormics growth as well as litter and bin emptying duties. You will be responsible for carrying out plant and machinery inspections complete a pro forma, prior to use and also report any defects, areas of concerns or any issues within the work place.

What you’ll need to succeed

You will need to:

  • Be physically fit
  • Hold an Excavator ticket 
  • Ideally have ICCM City & Guilds Safe use of Cemetery Excavator, Cemetery Dumper and ICCM City & Guilds H&S Burial Process or equivalent
  • Hold a full driving licence
  • Ability to show dignity and compassion when dealing with bereaved families;
  • Have knowledge of horticultural operations and be experienced in the use of large and small Horticultural/Agricultural machinery including front loader and backhoe operation
  • Follow established instructions, procedures, routing schedules, performing duties according to the Council’s Policies and codes of behaviour.
  • Able to make judgement of safe working within a busy park or open space and report back issues and/or necessary re-routing to supervisor.
  • Be flexible to provide cover at weekends and out of normal working hours when other works are required
