Are you an experienced social work manager who understands the value of social work intervention with vulnerable children, young people and their families?
Our Children and Families Services is looking for a skilled and experienced social work professional to join us as Service Leader for our Through Care Team 2, working to support our Looked After Children who are Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children and Care Leavers.

We are developing our model of practice around restorative principles and relational practice and delivering innovative work around exploitation, trauma, behaviour change and family-based practice alongside our colleagues in Adults Services. We have a number of multi-disciplinary teams and partnership working is a real strength in the city as evidenced in our recent JTAI inspection report.
The Children & Families Service provide social work/care support and intervention with children, young people and their parents/carers. This includes Children in Need of Support, Protection and Care, including Care Leavers, Children with Disabilities and Young People who offend and/or are at risk of exploitation. The service also provides a range of placement options for children who are in the care of the local authority including foster care and residential care, adoption and other care arrangements with Special Guardians and Connect Persons.
Your new role
We are looking for someone with extensive management experience who has a proven track record in improving services, who will be able to support our improvement journey for our Looked After Children and Care Leaving service. This is a large team of social workers and personal advisors, the role is managing 4 team leaders (managers) who line manage the Social Workers and Personal Advisors in the team. The role will be responsible for managing the team as a whole, whilst driving great performance and achieving good outcomes for our Looked After Children and Care Leavers through workforce development, performance management, compliance with statutory guidance and local policies and procedures, quality improvements and budget management.
You will ensure all statutory requirements are met in the delivery of social work services to children and that these are delivered to an exceptionally high standard. The Service Leader will have overall responsibility for casework and will supervise abd support team leaders with decision making in crisis situations. The Service Leader is required to work with a high level of autonomy.
Working with a range of partner agencies including Health, Education, Police, Housing and Community/ Voluntary Services, you will co-ordinate, plan, commission and deliver services to vulnerable children and young people in Portsmouth to meet the statutory requirements as defined in the Children Act 1989 and Children Act 2004.

You will be an experienced social work manager with extensive management experience and a proven track record in improving services who understands the value of social work intervention with vulnerable children, young people and their families.
You will have a recognised professional qualification in social work, excellent organisational and communication skills, and take pride in everything you do. You will be curious and creative and above all have a ‘can do’ attitude. You will be able to work as part of a team and ensure that front-line practice contributes to strategic priorities.
