About Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a city on the South Coast of England, and is the UK’s only island city. We are 64 miles south of London and 19 miles south-east of Southampton. Our thriving commercial ferry port serves destinations on the continent for freight and passenger traffic, with easy access to France and Spain.

The seafront

The seafront is one of the most popular areas of Portsmouth, enjoyed by visitors and residents alike. There are many places to visit along Southsea seafront including Southsea Castle and the D-Day Story. Next to the beach and seafront promenade, Southsea Common is a vast open space, ideal for picnics & barbecues.

Naval and maritime history

Portsmouth has a rich history, with proud naval and maritime heritage. The world’s oldest dry dock has been a significant naval port for centuries, and is home to world-famous ships including the HMS Warrior and Lord Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory. The naval base remains a major dockyard and base for the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Commandos.

A vibrant city

With live music venues, theatres, contemporary art galleries, two cathedrals, galleries, nightclubs, events and festivals throughout the year. There’s plenty to do in Portsmouth, and you can find a list of all events on the Visit Portsmouth website.

The Spinnaker Tower

The Spinnaker Tower is a striking landmark on the city’s skyline. It can be visited in Gunwharf Quays, an area of retail outlets, restaurants, clubs and bars.

Transport links

Portsmouth has strong rail links with London, Southampton and both the south east and south west coastal routes. Bus services run throughout the city, and there are local ferries to Gosport, Isle of Wight and Hayling Island. The park and ride is a popular way of getting into the city.
